Als men in een schakeling geen IC’s met tegen ESD beveiligde I/O-poorten kan gebruiken, dan kan de hier beschreven schakeling voor een alternatieve ESD-bescherming zorgen. Er zijn weliswaar veel ESD-clamp-arrays verkrijgbaar, maar die hebben gewoonlijk geen nauwkeurige begrenzing van de positieve en negatieve spanning.
