In the last System Check, we asked community members how they select microcontrollers. Here are the results.
  It seems microcontroller selection isn’t a constant activity for most design teams, but it remains a recurring and important part of the development cycle. Nearly half of respondents (48%) said they select microcontrollers several times per year, while another 32% do so occasionally. Only about 11% make these decisions monthly, suggesting that many engineers are working on longer product-development cycles rather than rapidly changing platforms. The data also indicates that very few respondents never face MCU selection decisions, highlighting just how important microcontrollers remain to the modern design process.

When it comes to choosing a microcontroller, it seems that development ecosystem and software tools dominate the decision-making process, cited by 46% of respondents — more than double the importance of wireless integration, low-power operation, or raw processing performance. Price and availability remain significant factors at 21%. What stands out is that engineers increasingly value productivity and support infrastructure over datasheet specs alone. A strong ecosystem, proven development tools, and accessible documentation can accelerate development, reduce risk, and ultimately matter more than squeezing out a few extra MIPS or milliamps.
